Campaign for Female Education and Empowerment Fund
Here is a hand-picked list of highly-rated[1] organizations working in women's health, education, and development. These organizations have grassroots ties and support various causes to empower women and girls in the community. This is by no measure a complete list of all the organizations working for causes affecting women, but merely a starting point, and can you find more resources here[2], [3], [4] and [5]: Kiva.org is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions. How does Kiva work? You, the donor/lender, give as little as $25 (or much more) to help someone somewhere to start a business, pay a bill, or go to school. That person eventually pays back the “loan” so that you, the lender can then lend to another person. It’s not a handout. Kiva is not just for women, but 81 percent of its beneficiaries are women, often entrepreneurs who found small businesses that help them, their families, and their communities. In parts of Asia and Africa, women go through prolonged childbirth without adequate care. The result can be a devastating fistula. The condition leaves the woman incontinent, but worse, she can be rejected by society, her family, and even her husband. Affected women become pariahs, today’s lepers. The Fistula Foundation works to prevent fistula in the first place and provides surgery to correct it. Between 2009 and 2018, the Fistula Foundation provided 39,866 of these surgeries to women in 32 countries. This life-changing surgery can be provided for less than $600. The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) is tackling poverty and inequality by supporting girls to go to school and succeed, and empowering young women to step up as leaders of change. Our model tackles inequality and unlocks the benefits that accrue from girls' education, igniting a wider social movement in girls' communities. Since 1993, CAMFED's innovative education programs in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania, and Malawi have directly supported more than 3.3 million students to attend primary and secondary school, and more than 5.7 million children have benefited from an improved learning environment. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] CharityNavigator ratings: all are rated 4 stars on charity navigator CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education): https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=11479 Kiva: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12978 Fistula Foundation: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=8855 [2] https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=2133#group-195 [3] https://www.thebalancesmb.com/saving-the-world-with-charities-for-women-and-girls-4158742 [4] https://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/causes-to-support/women-charities/ [5] https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/534393/organizations-helping-women-around-world

The Fight Against COVID-19 Continues Fund
***UPDATE - 11/25/2021*** Thanksgiving has come around once again and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported my cause. In the summer of 2020, I was delivering our homegrown plants by cart. I first thought of creating a website to assist me after experiencing the hassle of tracking orders and pricing. I worked on a site that users could use to document their interests and donate to the fund. I am happy to announce that thanks to the website, I have not only reached but exceeded my goal of $5,000! Thank you all for making this possible! ***UPDATE - 11/26/2020*** On this Thanksgiving day, I would like to give thanks to all those who have donated to this cause. Each and every dollar given by you all will help the Red Cross with their ongoing COVID-19 efforts and Janyaa with helping children in India continue their education. I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to BrightFunds for letting me run this campaign on their platform. We will leave the fundraiser open until the end of the year, as every penny counts. About: Hunger is on the rise in America, compounded by the prolonged pandemic which caused extensive job losses in America. With the number of cases growing rapidly across the world, the fight against COVID-19 has to continue. The impact of this virus is profound in developing countries like India, where education took a dive because of the major digital divide. 320 million students face a lack of learning because of the school closures and not having basic internet, which is taken for granted in developed countries. I’ve decided to fight for both of these causes and started this fundraiser with the purpose to collect donations for the American Red Cross and Janyaa in India. The funds will be equally split between these foundations. The American Red Cross has adjusted their resources to provide necessities for quarantine shelters and food distribution centers. Janyaa has been helping 500,000 students across more than 900 schools over the past 11 years by building curriculum-based science & math material to help 6th - 10th grade children. To continue these efforts during this pandemic, they are organizing interactive online sessions with nearly 5000 students and working with them closely over the next few months until schools reopen their gates. This is an absolute necessity for these children as they don't have the support structure at home to help with their studies. In appreciation of your donation, you can choose from one of the following: I am very passionate about the game of golf, and I have played for almost ten years. I would love to share my knowledge of the sport, so if you donate $50 or more, I will spend an hour with you or your kid on the golf range. Please fill the form below if you are interested in a golf lesson and want to sign up: http://tiny.cc/GolfForm If you live in and around San Jose, you can come by and pick a traditional Indian plant. As quantities are limited, early donors get their preferred plants. Please fill the form below if you are interested in plants and want to learn more: http://tiny.cc/PlantForm

Fundraising for Covid-19 Research in memory of Luigi Cirillo (Italy-VMCT)
(The above value already takes into account the Cisco match) follows the text in Italian We have all been affected by the untimely death of our dear former colleague, and friend for many, Luigi. We are bound to him by many years of working together, a chat at the coffee machine, or just some quick jokes exchanged walking in the aisles of the office ... memories that all of us will hold inside and will make us smile when thinking of him. In these months we have learned to stay away from each other, we have accepted the unacceptable, not being able to embrace those who were greeting us forever in one last hug. We have been forced to practice social distancing, but we have not resigned ourselves to losing our humanity, our need to be together and our ability to make ourselves feel present even when physical presence is not possible. Aware of how little is still known about coronavirus, we want to try to make Luigi and his family feel all our affection by proposing a fundraising campaign in favor of the Umberto Veronesi Foundation, to finance a research project on COVID-19. For details on the purpose of the collection you can refer to the Foundation website: https://www.fondazioneveronesi.it/ricerca/aree-di-ricerca If you want to make a contribution in this great battle, for and together with Luigi, you can make a donation here. Cisco will automatically double the amount donated by employees. Non-Cisco employees will also be able to donate can make the donation using this link https://www.fondazioneveronesi.it/donazioni/dona-ora and specifying “Covid-19 Research - in memory of Luigi Cirillo” with email to donazioni@fondazioneveronesi.it . At the end of August 2020 we will make a report with the names of those who participated in this fundraising campaign, completed by the photos we have of Luigi, and we will deliver it to his family. In thanking you, we want to hold you all in a big hug by stealing a slogan coined for this period: #DISTANTBUTNEAR ***** ***** Tutti noi siamo stati colpiti dalla prematura scomparsa del nostro caro ex-collega, per molti amico, Luigi.

Fundraising for Kidspire Vietnam to enable chromebook refreshes for orphanages in Vietnam
On the first of July, I reached my 12-year milestone with VMware. Looking back I think one of my most memorable experiences was my trip to Vietnam to help setup computer classrooms for various orphanages. (More of the backstory to be found here: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/?s=vietnam) When reaching the 12-year milestone each VMware employee gets an amount to donate to a charity of choice. I decided to donate to Kidspire Vietnam as I know there are various classrooms that are up for a hardware refresh. With my milestone donation and a personal donation, I have been able to provide sufficient funds to enable Kidspire Vietnam to refresh a single full classroom (15 Chromebooks). ** UPDATE: we have collected sufficient funds to allow Kidspire to refresh 2 classrooms, when combined with my grant and personal donation that means 3 full classrooms can be refreshed, a total of 45 new Chromebooks!! ** With this fundraiser, I am hoping to enable Kidspire Vietnam to refresh at least one more additional classroom. The cost of a refresh is between 3500 USD and 4000 USD. Hopefully, we will be able to reach this goal. Believe me when I say that nothing beats seeing how much these kids enjoy learning about new technology and being able to interact with people over the internet. I would like to thank everyone upfront for donating, or considering to donate. Thanks, Duncan VMware // Yellow-Bricks.com
